SYNOPSIS: Many factors contributed to fashion in the 19th century, among them Charles Worth, post-Civil War wealth in the American upper middle class, and the International Exhibition of Paris in 1867. Charles Frederick Worth opened his business in Paris in 1858 and changed the world of fashion forever with the beginning of the haute couture. Visitors to the Paris stimulated fashion awareness, and American women could now afford those fashions. Harper's Bazar weekly magazine grew out of this phenomenon.
