SYNOPSIS: One of the most comprehensive books of its kind, it includes an overview of women's fashions for each decade and detailed black and white illustrations, as well as photographs of actual period costumes. (Over 1000 illustrations in all) Cunnington gives an overview of the undergarments worn, hats/bonnets in style and hairstyles for each decade. He then breaks down each decade by year, summarizing changes in fashion from the previous year. For each year, he details the Dresses (day, riding, afternoon and evening), Outdoor garments, and Accessories (shoes, gloves, jewellry, bonnets) which were popular. The fabrics used for these garments are also listed, with a glossary in the back for easy identification of obsolete terms. A must for every writer of Nineteenth Century British Historicals.
